The awards which recognise everything that’s great about Yorkshire Food & Drink producers received the highest number entries in its history which culminated in a prestigious awards dinner hosted on 23rd September by chef and television celebrity Rosemary Shrager.

“This is fantastic recognition for all the hard work all the team put in here at the brewery”, said Matthew Hodgson, who collected the award on behalf of the brewery, “Yorkshire has a wealth fantastic producers and we are proud to be recognised as such”.

“Frothingham Best has done very well for us winning a Silver Award in the SIBA North Beer Competition in the Best Bitter category in 2009 and so this is another award to add to it”

Frothingham Best is the breweries flagship best bitter at 4.3% abv available in both cask and bottle being dark amber in colour with a complex depth of both fruit and malt notes. It takes its name from the hamlet of South Frodingham where the family run brewery is based, which used to be named Frothingham and to which descendents took their family name.

A familiar voice has returned to telephone here at Great Newsome with the arrival back of Doreen from epic West Highland Way Adventure.

Doreen along with 5 friends completed the 96 mile journey with standing endless wet & windy weather throughout there journey. Doreen carried out the walk raising funds for the British Heart Foundation and celebrated the completion of each days walking by enjoying many of the varied real ales she discovered on her trip.

“It was hard work but one of the best things I have ever done”, she commented, ” the camaraderie and banter was fantastic and I could recommend it to anyone”.

Are there any more adventures lined up for Doreen, well we’ll have to wait and see!

The 154Km (96miles) Route starts at Milngavie passes through Mugdock Country Park, follows the shores of Loch Lomond, passing Ben Lomond, through Glen Falloch and Strathfillan, crossing Rannoch Moor, past Buachaille Etive Mor to the head of Glencoe, climbing the Devil’s Staircase, descending to sea level to cross the River Leven at the head of Loch Leven before entering Lairigmor and Glen Nevis and finishes at Gordon Square in Fort William.

Although she will be sadly missed over the next week it is all in a good cause, The British Heart Foundation is the charity she is raising money for.

The annual art and culture festival, which runs from September 1 – 3, features a wide range of music, film, comedy and cabaret to appeal to a broad cross section of the public. Great Newsome Brewery beer will be available in bars within Fruitspace (Humber St Entertainment venue), an outdoor bar located adjacent to the stage at Wellington St car park and at the outdoor bar based within Queens Gardens (named Freedom Gardens for the duration of the festival).

The brewery will also be supplying beer for a VIP reception at the City Hall and to celebrate the whole event will produce an exclusive ‘Freedom Ale’ which will be on offer within the bars. Freedom ale is a 3.8%, easy drinking session ale, golden in colour which has been chosen to quench the thirst of many a festival goer.

The brewery, based on the Hodgson family farm near South Frodingham, produces a range of cask and bottled ales for retail, catering and wholesale outlets. While featuring on the pumps at local gastropubs and restaurants, Great Newsome beer also goes as far afield as London. Speciality and seasonal ales are also produced – the latest was English Pride, a 3.7% session bitter, launched to mark St George’s Day and the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April.

“Being part of something like Freedom Festival is a fantastic opportunity for us to introduce our beers to a new audience,” said the brewery’s Matthew Hodgson. “People often think real ale is a heavy beer which only appeals to a certain type of drinker, but we produce a range of beers which suit all palates, including pale wheat beers and ruby beers.

“There’s nothing quite like enjoying great entertainment in the late summer sunshine with a beer in your hand. We’re really looking forward to participating in this year’s festival.”

Brewer Nick prepares for St George’s Day celebrations as a knight in armour while brewing the new beer English Pride at Great Newsome Brewery

English Pride is 3.7% session bitter, deep amber with a tinge of ruby in colour. It has initial grassy notes on the palate with almost honey notes on the finish. Available from today (March 14) through to the end of April in this run, the beer will mark both St George’s Day (April 23) and the forthcoming royal wedding, with a unique pump clip available for the wedding weekend.

“English Pride has been brewed to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April, a time when we’ll see street parties in the spring sunshine and people enjoying traditional English food and drink,” says Matthew Hodgson, of Great Newsome Brewery. “However, the name of the beer and dual design of the pump clip gives it a wider appeal, making it suitable for St George’s Day celebrations as well.”

The beer will also be made available for other special occasions, including England’s participation in the Rugby World later this year, and during the London 2012 Olympics.

“We started this year on a high note with England’s Ashes win, and it looks as though the England rugby team are heading for a Grand Slam victory. With the royal wedding coming up and next year’s Olympics in this country, it’s a real period of celebration for England and what more appropriate for celebrating than a traditional real ale,” says Matthew Hodgson.

“The beer, the first ruby ale we’ve produced, is named to celebrate the arrival of our new spaniel puppy, Ruby. We lost our original spaniel and the star of our logo, Jem, this year and it didn’t feel right without a dog here as part of the family,” said the brewery’s Matthew Hodgson.

“There’s nothing like a great pint of ale in front of a roaring fire after a long walk on a winter’s afternoon with the dog. However, we know lots of dogs are abandoned at this time of year or bought as unsuitable presents so we are endorsing Dogs Trust’s seasonal message that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas. As part of that, we will make a donation of £1.50 for every cask of Ruby’s Regard sold from now until the end of January 2011 to Dogs Trust,” said Mr Hodgson.

Ruby’s Regard 4.5% abv is a ruby-coloured autumnal ale with hoppy notes of cut grass on the nose and citrus orange on the palate with a sweet finish. It joins Great Newsome’s core and occasional range of cask and bottled beers, including Sleck Dust, Pricky Back Otchan and Frothingham Best.

The brewery, based on the Hodgson’s family farm near Frodingham, has also launched a seasonal gift pack of Christmas ales Yule Do and Newsome Noël. The holly patterned, red card Christmas styled gift box also includes a branded glass or another Great Newsome ale. Yule Do is a traditional ale, abv 4.3%, and Newsome Noël is an easy drinking, contemporary ale, abv 5.0%.
